This unique Innovation Manager position plays a critical role in helping to advance breakthrough healthcare innovations that are created by Intermountain Healthcare and SelectHealth caregivers. Operating from within the dynamic and fast-paced Intermountain Ventures team, the Innovation Manager will support Intermountain's mission and vision by fostering internal innovations that can be developed and commercialized to transform healthcare at Intermountain and beyond. This position will execute on the day-to-day program and project requirements for successful evaluation, development, funding, and transition of high-impact innovations into internal piloting and implementation activities, as well as external commercialization via new company venture formation, commercial collaborations, and/or licensing.
This is an enterprise-wide role reporting to the Commercialization Director and primarily supporting the Intermountain Ventures Foundry team. This role will work closely with internal innovators as well as clinical and non-clinical functional teams across Intermountain. In addition, this individual will collaborate with external consultants and companies, as well as potential investors to help transition innovations to the market. This role also works closely with the Intellectual Property Office team to assess, protect, and provide ongoing input to help manage these inventions and related licenses.
Essential Job Duties
Evaluate innovations and other types of business opportunities that are internally created by Intermountain and SelectHealth caregivers
Evaluate new innovations and business opportunities for internal impact and external commercial potential.
Conduct complex primary and secondary competitive solution research and market analysis.
Recommend advancement pathways or referral resources.
Develop project plans and execute evidence-generating activities that build innovation value and advance innovation projects toward commercialization
Review submissions and recommend internal and external grant funding opportunities and internal program participation decisions.
Review stage gate materials and recommend innovation project advancement decisions.
Conduct and support problem definition and solution development with innovators, and craft the associated value proposition development and business modeling.
Coach and assist innovators with solution experiments, product prototyping and validation testing.
Provide project management as needed, including recommending and executing metrics and reporting.
Teach and support innovation-related classes, workshops, and other program elements.
Advance and support the transition and commercialization of innovations with high impact potential
Develop innovation commercialization plans, including internal and external strategies, business case development, risk analysis, funding requests, and related presentations or proposals.
In collaboration with other Ventures team members, lead and support the planning and execution of internal transition activities, including internal pilots and hand-offs to operational implementation teams.
In collaboration with other Ventures team members, provide external transition planning and execution support activities for New Venture organization, launch, and funding.
Support innovation marketing activities, including identifying potential commercial partners, preparing non-confidential information, and developing and implementing marketing strategies.
Support innovation licensing activities in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Office, including developing client/partner relationships and providing input toward license agreements.
In collaboration with Ventures evaluation and implementation team members, as assigned, support the planning and execution of day-to-day requirements for successful piloting of promising external commercial innovations within Intermountain, and the integration of new ventures and investments into Intermountain operations.
Work closely with the Intellectual Property Office to assess, protect, and manage intellectual property
Document and assess invention disclosures during evaluation and analyze to identify problem-solution opportunities.
Collaborate to assess prior art, determine the intellectual property protectability for inventions, and recommend protection strategies that align with the market opportunity.
Build and maintain program operational infrastructure, processes and reporting
Develop and maintain best-practice innovation program criteria, policies, procedures, guidelines, and innovator educational materials.
Consistently record activities, communications and artifacts into relevant databases.
Ensure timely monthly performance reporting. Actively monitor and report KPI’s to identify continuous improvement opportunities.
Collaborate with other system functions to ensure efficient processes and operations (Legal, Compliance, Research, IT, Communications, IP Office, Continuous Improvement, etc.).
Provide leadership and management support
Support the Commercialization Director in the design, maintenance and growth of the program.
Provide coaching and mentoring that builds capability and capacity among the team members.
Provide ad hoc support to the Ventures evaluation, investment, and implementation teams.
Potentially supervise one or more associate, analyst, project manager or intern.
Provide innovation and commercialization outreach and engagement
Network internally and attend internal events to build relationships, promote the program, and solicit innovation ideas and program participation.
Collaborate across the system to develop problem insights and identify innovation opportunities with significant internal and external value potential.
Network externally and attend events to build relationships with external organizations, industry partners and collaborators.
Bachelor's degree in a relevant business, science, engineering, healthcare economics or related field.
6+ years' experience with innovation development, management, and commercialization.
Minimum of two years of relevant experience with new venture formation or technology licensing.
Demonstrated project management skills.
Working knowledge of and experience using various business modeling tools and frameworks, including Value Proposition Design, Business Model Generation, Lean Start-Up or similar.
Working knowledge of and experience with patents and other intellectual property.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and impeccable interpersonal skills.
Ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders across diverse internal and external teams.
Ability to balance multiple projects and priorities and to move quickly in a fast-paced environment.
Strong Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills.
Ability to travel as needed.
Interact with others requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.
Operate computers, telephones, and various office equipment, including manipulating paper and objects requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.
See and read computer monitors and documents.

MBA or relevant master's degree.
2-4 years’ experience with innovation development, management and/or commercialization of healthcare IT or digital health technology.
Experience working in a healthcare setting with knowledge of medical terminology.
Understanding of the complexities of the healthcare industry including reimbursements, new policies from CMS, and innovative healthcare delivery models.
Experience in the early stage planning, launch, and growth of new healthcare technology or services.
Familiarity with USFDA and ISO regulatory requirements for medical products and services.
Experience with technology prototyping and validation testing.
