The mission of Stanford University's Office of Technology Licensing is to promote the transfer of Stanford technology for society's use and benefit while generating unrestricted income to support research and education, and to facilitate and develop corporate sponsored research that balances both industry and University needs. The Office of Technology Licensing serves as the primary office at Stanford to provide guidance to the community in intellectual property matters. One primary function is to disseminate and commercialize Stanford's intellectual property assets through licensing. In addition, the Industrial Contracts Office (ICO) within OTL is key to enabling strong industry funded research relationships. With nearly $95 million from 779 licensed technologies in 2015-2016, Stanford's breakthrough licensed innovations span medicine, engineering, and humanities. In FY 2016, ICO handled approximately $70M of corporate research agreements that enabled faculty to work closely with industry. The next Executive Director will be joining the University at a pivotal moment with a new University President and after the longstanding leadership of Katharine Ku, to help shape the direction of Stanford's commercialization efforts and its growing interactions with industry. The office is a key component of Stanford's vision to amplify the university's contributions to the country, humanity and an increasingly complex and interdependent world.
Reporting to the Vice Provost and Dean of Research, the Executive Director will provide strategic guidance, proactive direction, and support to faculty, students, and staff in all aspects of industry funded research and technology licensing for the University. This individual will foster industry funded research and licensing of inventions and discoveries from the University's research. Together with other University offices, the next Executive Director will work to develop strategic partnerships with industry. In executing this role, the Executive Director will be expected to: 1) provide leadership and strategic direction for the Office of Technology Licensing and Industrial Contracts Office; 2) act as the technology licensing ambassador and champion the impact of the University's intellectual property; 3) continue to develop the strong, robust and productive relationship with inventors and entrepreneurs on campus; 4) assess the current practices in light of rising volume and complexities of technology licensing and industrial contracts activity; and 5) serve as a national leader in the technology transfer community.
