The Manager, Licensing is responsible for leading the execution and continuous improvement of the ATCC commercial licensing program. Program goal is to meet revenue targets by capturing value from ATCC assets and intellectual property while also protecting the proprietary rights of ATCC and its depositors and providing high quality customer service. The incumbent identifies and quantifies the value of assets and intellectual property in the ATCC portfolio and identifies prospective licensees and collaborators. The Director develops processes for the efficient and cost-effective development, execution, and monitoring of commercial agreements and manages a personal portfolio of deals while also assigning and supervising deal flow within the team. The Director monitors the relevant competitive and licensing environment and proactively designs and introduces new licensing initiatives consistent with ATCC values and practices. This position must work and think independently; duties of this position are to be completed under minimal guidance. The incumbent actively supports, complies with and enforces all ATCC company policies and procedures.
Develops and manages for performance the day-to-day operations of the commercial licensing program for ATCC assets and in-licensed technologies; Identifies potential licensees for ATCC assets and intellectual property. Generates licensing revenue according to annual budget.
Designs and introduces new licensing initiatives to generate new sources of revenue for ATCC consistent with ATCC values and practices; Conducts out-licensing business development activities as assigned; Assists in determining the commercial potential and value of ATCC assets and intellectual property; Makes licensing recommendations based on such analysis.
Manages personal deal portfolio and supervises licensing team deal portfolio to drive performance and revenue targets. Develops processes for efficient and cost-effective management of overall deal pipeline, deal negotiation and execution of licenses and other agreements. Assists supervisor in management of outside counsel and consultants to ensure budget compliance.
Monitors negotiation and compliance of ATCC licensing agreements through interactions with ATCC staff, management, inventors, legal counsel and licensees, including development of metrics for performance and reporting formats for management.
Assists supervisor in evaluating and valuing potential technologies for in-licensing and in managing current portfolio of in-license agreements, including monitoring patent expiry and license re-negotiation as needed.
Participates in and leads multi-functional teams to implement ATCC commercial licensing program consistent with organizational goals. Provides in-/out-licensing strategy and support to all appropriate departments within the organization.
Assists with intellectual property activities as needed, including IP assessments to determine commercial availability.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in a biological science, engineering, health-related field, or business.
Minimum of 7-10 years proven experience in commercial licensing in a life science corporation or an academic setting.
Minimum of 2 years of previous supervisory experience; ability to lead and manage a team for performance.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Extensive deal sheet showing successful track record of negotiating and closing commercial license agreements or other partnering deals; excellent negotiation skills; proven experience in valuing potential tangible assets and intellectual property.
Fluency in contractual language and legal implications, contractual risk mitigation, and in the licensing and contracting process.
Self-starter, motivated and takes initiative; strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills; able to work collaboratively with all levels of staff and external partners to resolve problems to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving and results.

Master’s Degree or higher degree preferred.
Prior licensing experience in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, diagnostic company, or a research reagent supplier.
