The Massachusetts Institute of Technology invites applications for an Intellectual Property Officer working in the dynamic environment of the Technology Licensing Office (TLO). You will provide overall strategic management of MIT’s vast patent portfolio by developing tools for your TLO colleagues to help them make quality decisions about the patent portfolios they individually manage. With ~2,600 issued and ~1,500 pending US patents and over 350 new US patent applications annually, this role will work closely with licensing colleagues to ensure the appropriate protection of MIT’s intellectual assets by serving as a thought leader on best practices for filing, prosecution, and maintenance decisions. You will also guide the administrative patent group on best operating procedures for correspondence within the TLO and outside law firms. This role has a unique opportunity to evaluate and recommend optimized protocols for patent database management, evaluating COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) and new build possibilities. You will have opportunities to create and lead IP centric seminars and workshops to internal staff and the MIT community. Responsibilities include being the relationship manager with patent law firms hired to prosecute MIT’s patents and providing guidelines on how to do business with the MIT TLO. You must be able to work closely with Technology Licensing Officers working in a wide range of technology areas to provide high level guidance on prosecution strategy. You will be responsible for managing four administrative staff. A B.S. in science or engineering required and you must be a registered Patent Agent (USPTO); a law degree and/or advanced degree MSc and Ph.D. is preferred. You must have extensive, thorough, up-to-date knowledge of patenting processes, rules, procedures and practices surrounding U.S. and foreign patent prosecution. The ideal candidate will have a broad range of patent related experience, including significant experience in invention evaluation, strategic patent portfolio management, and drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications. Significant experience managing docketing, billing, budgets etc. as part of a legal operation. In-house experience in a university environment is a plus. Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required, as are strong interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach to develop and maintain effective working relationships. You must have experience managing a team of people and have experience in successfully leading and implementing change in a vibrant working environment.
