What You'll Do: The Director of Business Development (DoBD) at Mount Sinai Innovation Partners (MSIP) is a trusted business advisor to our investigators and inventors and a credible colleague of MSIP's commercial counterparts. The DoBD identifies nascent technologies across all therapeutic areas and modalities with commercial potential, creates strategies to advance technologies internally to position them for high value partnerships, leads the scientific evaluation of promising new technology disclosures, crafts strategic patent strategies and marketing plans, and actively engages with the commercial marketplace to help ensure that innovative therapeutics, diagnostics, devices and other technologies are made available to our worldwide patient population and become the new standard of care. As the deal team leader for negotiations with commercial partners, the DoBD drives the scientific and business framework for such transactions. The DoBD reports directly to the Managing Director of Business Development and Licensing and works collaboratively with Finance, Operations, Patent and Contracts teams to bring exceptional value to the Health System, the School of Medicine and our commercial partners. The DoBD is fully able to draft complex License Agreements, Sponsored Research Agreements, Collaboration Agreements and similar intellectual property agreements. The DoBD develops strong relationships and networks, influences decisions, thinks strategically and executes good deals to deliver the right asset to the right partner at the right time. Duties and Responsibilities: - Initiates and maintains productive relationships with investigators and inventors at all ranks and may help guide their work to better positioning for licensing. Guides inventors on plans and activities to de-risk and mature nascent technologies.
- Manages a large, diverse technology portfolio across the full life cycle of portfolio management.
- Leads the final scientific and commercial evaluation of technologies from any scientific discipline and makes recommendations at the technology Decision Meeting to initiate, continue or terminate investment in the Health System and the School of Medicine technologies.
- In close collaboration with the Patent Team, directs the development and execution of the patent strategy for a technology.
- Leads the evaluation of commercial potential of technology, models and predicts asset value, directs response to the industry RFPs, and develops and maintains productive partnerships with commercial leaders.
- Leads the development of technology-specific sales and marketing materials and communications, develops marketing strategies and campaigns, initiates industry meetings.
- Utilizes industry contacts and relationships to identify the “right” commercial partner for an innovative technology; creates license and contract terms; negotiates and closes complicated deals, especially those with unusual IP language, inter-related contracts, multiple parties, and/or large-scale master agreements
- Partners with internal and external parties to identify, mitigate, and resolve scientific and contractual risk or conflicts and other partnership-related matters
- Performs other related duties as assigned, including recruiting and developing the Business Development function and teams
What You'll Bring: - Masters of Life Sciences, Ph.D. preferred. MBA or JD is a plus.
- Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant experience in the pharmaceutical, bio-technology or academic healthcare sectors with demonstrated success
- Track record of successful negotiations and executed complex intellectual property deals
- Excellent scientific, legal and business skills
- Outstanding judgment and capability to manage highly complex issues and relationships, and highly strategic and critical thinking with demonstrated success at delivering results
- Ability to influence and manage challenging situations using scientific, legal and/or industry knowledge, and outstanding interpersonal skills
- Strong multi-tasking and time management skills in a fast-paced environment
- Effective networking, with both internal (ISMMS) and external (industry) clients, including all the campuses within MSHS
- Expertise in current market conditions and trends for patents and commercial licensing agreements, especially for biomedical inventions and working knowledge of best practices in biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry deal terms
- Functions well as a contributor to inter-disciplinary groups dedicated to the protection, evaluation, partnering and commercialization of intellectual property
- Proven ability to establish and sustain effective relationships and partnerships
- Certified Licensing Professional or Registered Technology Transfer Professional strongly preferred
- Registered Patent Agent or Attorney a plus
- MS Office Skills, Inteum a plus
